Help with Google Ads keyword match types

Google Ads uses keyword match types to decide how broadly search queries can match booked keywords. Positive match types now work heavily with meaning and search intent. A keyword no longer has to match a search query character by character for an ad to enter the auction. Negative keywords work more narrowly and should therefore be planned separately.

Broad Match

Broad Match is the broadest keyword match type and also the default when no other match type is selected. Ads can show for searches related to the keyword, even if the query does not contain the same words. Google may consider previous search activity, landing page content, assets and other keywords in the ad group.

This match type creates reach, but it needs especially clean search terms, useful negative keywords and often Smart Bidding because interpretation can become very broad.

Phrase Match

Phrase Match uses quotation marks and can show for searches that include the meaning of the keyword. The search query may be more specific and the meaning can also be implied. Word order is no longer rigid as it used to be, but it remains important when it changes the meaning.

Since the 2021 change, Phrase Match has taken over much of the former Broad Match Modifier. In practice, Phrase Match is often the middle control layer: less narrow than old Phrase Match, but more controlled than modern Broad Match.

Exact Match

Exact Match uses square brackets and provides the strongest control. Ads can show for searches that have the same meaning or the same search intent as the keyword. It is no longer absolutely exact in the old sense, but intent-based.

Exact Match is useful when a term is especially valuable, needs a separate budget or should be monitored closely in reporting.

Negative Keywords

Negative keywords exclude search queries. They are especially important when Broad Match or broad Phrase keywords are used. Negative match types behave differently from positive keyword match types: synonyms, singular forms and plural forms are not automatically excluded. A list of genuinely irrelevant search intents is therefore more useful than isolated gut-feeling terms.

Close variants, singular, plural and misspellings

Google Ads can account for close variants across all keyword match types. According to Google, this includes misspellings, singular and plural forms, stems, abbreviations and accents. Exact Match and Phrase Match can also include reordered words with the same meaning, added or removed function words, implied words, synonyms, paraphrases and searches with the same search intent.

Singular and plural

A keyword such as [ai consultant] may also be close to ai consultants, ai consultant wanted or ai consulting if Google classifies the search intent as matching. Not every variant has to be added manually. When in doubt, Google Ads will use the keyword with the best ad rank anyway.

Misspellings

A keyword such as "google ads consulting" can also cover variants like google ad consulting, gogle ads consulting or google advertising consulting. This reduces the need to artificially inflate typo lists.

How to read negative match types correctly

For negative keywords, match types are narrower than for positive keywords. The structure stays the same, but the effect is reversed: the question is not when ads can be delivered, but which searches should not trigger an ad.
